FMM research

The Faculty of Medicine of Monastir (FMM) has a history and tradition in research development and training in the field of research. The achievements in this field have evolved according to objectives, resources, and continuous assessment of the academic and socio-economic impact obtained. The different deanship teams have worked since the establishment of our institution to promote these activities in line with the institutional mission and with the objective of valorizing and shining in our regional, national, and international environment.

The position of Vice Dean for Research was created and introduced into the organizational structure of the faculty since 2011, and it has been maintained and strengthened by successive deanship teams.

The missions of this department were to:

  • Define priority research areas for FMM in coordination with national priorities and citizens’ needs.
  • Enhance the quality of research training.
  • Strengthen coordination and collaboration among the different research structures within FMM and external research structures.
  • Improve the visibility and impact of our institution in the field of research.

The Faculty of Medicine of Monastir has always organized its research activities in alignment with established national research policies, prioritized based on the needs of the Tunisian population and our healthcare system.

At the national level, the national research organization is ensured by the General Directorate of Scientific Research (GDSR) under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the National Committee for the Evaluation of Scientific Research Activities (NCESRA), and governed by several laws, mentioned later in this document and attached to it.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has published the strategic research plan 2017-2022 in the form of an official document titled “Scientific Research: Priorities, Future Directions, and Key Initiatives 2017-2022.” This document outlines the national vision to make Tunisia a regional center of excellence in research and innovation, aiming to promote development and improve the quality of life for its citizens. It also specifies the following national priority research areas and sub-themes:

  1. Energy, water, and food security
  2. Societal project: Education, Culture, and Youth
  3. Citizen’s Health

3.1. Drug design – Vaccine development and biosimilars

3.2. Health governance and economy

3.3. Epidemics, chronic diseases, and emerging diseases

3.4. E-health and telemedicine

4. Digital and industrial transition

5.Governance and decentralization

6.Circular economy

Based on the priority research areas set at the national level by the Ministry of Scientific Research and the General Directorate of Scientific Research (GDSR), and approved by the Council of Universities, as well as the research priorities of the University of Monastir, in coordination with the Vice Dean for Research and Cooperation, the head of the research department at FMM presented potentially prioritized research themes to the scientific council on the date of 06.07.2018. These themes were discussed and prioritized based on the needs of the Tunisian population and our healthcare system by the scientific council of FMM, which serves as a consultation and proposal body for scientific projects, as stipulated by the decree 2008-416 of February 11, 2008.

Thus, the approved priority research areas in our institution are as follows:

  • Cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and neurological diseases
  • Nutrition and quality of life
  • Information and communication technology in healthcare
  • Pharmacology and chronopharmacology
  • Innovation in exploring and integrating new technological concepts

Therefore, these priority research areas at FMM are aligned with national priorities and specifically fall within national priority number 3, as well as priority number 1 (food security), number 4 (digital transition), and number 5 (improving governance)
