Second Cycle of Medical Studies (SCMS)

Conditions for enrollment

The second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) lasts four years, including three years of teaching with externship rotations in healthcare facilities, followed by one year of internship (SCMS 4), which includes both theoretical and practical training in medical faculties and approved internship sites recommended by the scientific councils of these faculties.

No credits are awarded when transitioning from the first cycle to the second cycle of medical studies.

To be eligible for enrollment in the first year of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS), students must have successfully completed the first cycle of studies.

Enrollment is annual, and each student is required to renew their enrollment at the beginning of each academic year.

Students in the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) can have unlimited enrollments. However, in case of exceeding seven (7) enrollments, the faculty council, after reviewing the student’s file, may set a limit on the number of enrollments. The decision of the scientific council must be justified.

Educational objectives

The second cycle of medical studies is dedicated to clinical training and the teaching of various pathologies from a scientific, clinical, and socio-medical perspective. The second cycle of medical studies prepares students for the third cycle of medical studies.

The teachings of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) enable students to acquire the professional skills necessary to meet the preventive, curative, palliative, and functional rehabilitation health needs of the population.

The curriculum of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) includes teachings on:

  • Clinical management and therapeutic approach to common pathologies affecting the human body, regardless of their origin.
  • The socio-medical aspects of health in terms of prevention, epidemiology, economics, sociology of health, and research in the field of health sciences.
  • The legal and organizational aspects of healthcare, as well as the ethical and deontological aspects of the medical profession.
  • The program of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) aims to develop students’ communication skills and foster a spirit of critical analysis of scientific data.
Internships

The internships take place in accredited university hospital and public healthcare structures approved by the scientific council of the respective medical faculty.

The internships during the first three years of the second cycle of medical studies are carried out in general medicine and medical specialties, surgery and surgical specialties, pediatrics, gynecology-obstetrics, psychiatry, and social medicine, family, and community medicine.

The internship in the fourth year of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS 4) consists of four three-month periods, including one in general medicine, one in surgery, one in gynecology-obstetrics, and one in pediatrics.

Criteria for success:
  • The teachings of the two years of the first cycle of medical studies (FCMS) and the first three years of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS) are assessed through a final examination consisting of two sessions, a main session and a makeup session.
  • The fourth year of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS 4) is considered an internship year, consisting of four three-month internship periods. The fourth year of the second cycle of medical studies (SCMS 4) is assessed through a practical examination.

At the end of the second cycle of medical studies, medical faculties award a diploma in Clinical Medicine to students who have successfully passed the exams, completed all the required internships of the cycle, and have no outstanding credits.
